The reflection of the flash makes the cowling look brighter than it is. |

More work on engine cowling.
Dry brushed Tamiya aluminium on the engine cowling tonight and removed the mask. There will be a few touch ups to do around the edges, but the masking worked quite well.

Back from the Half Marathon Trip
Got back last night. Too tired for any work last night, but back at it tonight. Painted the engine cowling to start the beaten metal effect.
Flat black undercoat. |
Pretty rough but that is fine as it will help the "beaten" effect. |
Dry brush Tamiya Metallic Grey. |

Guns and Cowling
Working on the guns and cowling. The resin guns were nicely cast, but the slots to put these in were two small so much fine filing and sanding were required.
Engine mask removed and cowling masking is put on. |
Tamiya tape works well for me. I burnish it down with a toothpick. |
The gun barrel slot is too small. |
After much sanding the barrel is in place. |
Black undercoat for the cowling. Not that the engine exhaust were removed earlier in the build as I thought they would get damaged with all the handling. |
Starting to come together. |

Even More Work Done - Dappling - I am on a Roll
Had some time tonight so I started working on the dapple effect on the parts of the plane that didn't receive the wood effect treatment.
Dappling begins on upper wing surface using Tamiya dark brown. |
Working slowly and going over sections a couple of times. |
The "brush" used for the dapple effect - a Q-tip. |
The final effect completed on the upper wing surface. |
Lower wings, rudder, and stabilizes get the dapple treatment as well. |
The are spots where the dapple ran onto the fuselage, but that is okay because once the oil paint is dry it will be dappled as well. |
The dapple effect from above. |
Work Continues of the Phoenix D1
Heavily thinned burnt sienna oil paint goes on first. |
This is gently rubbed with a soft cloth to remove excess. |
Small dots of raw umber are placed randomly over the area. |
Then a stiff flat head brush is used to create the wood pattern. |
Kitchener Show - Interesting Bit of History
While I was waiting for the judging to finish, I noticed a huge piece of clear resin with some artifacts in it. On closer inspection what I saw were some very interesting bits and pieces of a RCAF bomber that had been shot down. Along with the bits and pieces were images of the crew and of the Luftwaffe pilot who shot them down. Most interesting to me were the photos of the crew with the German pilot after the war.
Pictures from the Kitchener Show
As I said in my last post there wasn't much at the Kitchener Show, but the underwater salvage diorama was cool. Here are some pictures of some of the entries.

Kitchener Show - Heavy Metal
No modelling today as I was at the Kitchener show and then stopped at Geoff's and took him out for a dinner and to see the movie Fury.
Not a lot of competition at the Kitchener show as not many models were entered. So I got a silver in Jet Engine Aircraft and a gold in Rigged Aircraft in 1/48 or larger.

Experiments with Dapple Camouflage
Experimenting with colours for the dapple camouflage. On the left are two attempts with a Q-tip and on the right are two attempts with a microbrush. I like the dark brown colour better. I like the size of the microbrush dapple spots, but the brush holds too much paint and they end up looking too dark and not dappled. The Q-tip dapple looks good, but the spots might be large. The box art gives an idea of the effect I am trying to achieve and the wing gives and idea of the scale.

Wednesday is running night so no work done tonight.
Hope will get something done for tomorrow. This will not be ready for the Kitchener show. :(

Disaster Fixed and Back at It
Managed to clean off all the disaster coat and have now put on a first coat from the trusty air brush.
For this coat I am using Tamiya Color XF-57 with my trusty Paasche single action.

Isoprop and White Spirits to the Rescue
Used a small amount of white spirits and then Isoprop to remove all of the paint from the fuselage and wings. Works very well and no need for sanding.
Painting Disaster
Argghhhh! My primer was clumping even after many shakes. Ended with very uneven finish. Trying to rescue the wings and fuselage now.

More work done and an accidental discovery.
Got the engine masked and the tail assembly on.
Now this discovery. I went to use PolyFilla to fill some seams. After I applied it I realized I hadn't used PollyFilla I had applied ceramic tile cement! With visions of the model melting to a pile of goo in front of me spinning in my head I stayed calm and let it dry. Turns out ceramic tile cement is a very good seam filler for plastic models. It spreads easily. Is easy to sand. It also shrinks very little as it dries.
